Wandering Monsters

I use the rules from Legends and Lairs Wildscape for wandering monsters. This makes the survival skill more useful as it helps to determine what is encountered. Every four hours spent in an area requires a check to find out if an encounter happens.

Modifiers to Survival for Wandering Encounters

Situation Modifier
For each group member above six (animals count as members) - 1
For each group member below six + 1
Per each member that is size large or larger - 1
Per each member that is size small or smaller + 1
Per each member wearing heavy armor + 1
Group is traveling with vehicle - 4
Slowest party member’s speed is 30 ft or faster + 2
Slowest party member’s speed is 15 ft or slower - 2
Per each member that has 5 or more ranks in survival + 2
Per each member that has 0 ranks in survival - 2
The group has a light source - 4
The group is near a path/road - 2
The group is near a source of water - 2
The group is in a concealed shelter + 2
The group is in the forest + 2
The group is in the mountains/hills/swamp + 1
The group is in the plains/desert - 2
Hot/cold/light rain/snow day + 1
Heavy rain/snow + 2
Clear day - 2

Survival Check Results

Result Situation
4 or less Group blunders into an ambush. Monster gains surprise.
5 – 9 Group can make perception checks with a – 4 penalty to avoid being surprised.
10 – 16 Group has an encounter, neither group is surprised.
17 – 21 Group can make perception checks with a + 4 bonus. The group may gain surprise.
22 – 26 Group can choose to surprise or avoid encounter.
27 + Group gains a + 4 bonus to Stealth checks.
